EC proposes further extension of temporary protection for those displaced from Ukraine

European Commission flag

The European Commission (EC) proposed to extend temporary protection for people fleeing Russia's aggression against Ukraine for another year, from 5 March 2025 to 4 March 2026.

This extension will ensure that all those fleeing Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine can find protection in the EU, and that the almost 4.2 million people already benefiting from temporary protection in EU Member States continue to be provided with as much stability as possible.

The EC will present the proposal to ministers at the Justice and Home Affairs Council on 13 June, for the council to formally adopt the proposal.

Read the EC proposal in full here.

The Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) ensures the following rights for those displaced from Ukraine in the EU:

  • Access to registration and documentation
  • Special protection for children (almost one fifth of Ukraine's children are currently taking refuge in EU Member States)
  • Access to education and vocational training
  • Addressing risks of trafficking in human beings and supporting victims of war crimes (see the the Common Anti-trafficking Plan)
  • Access to healthcare and social benefits
  • Access to jobs (see the Talent Pool Pilot)
  • Access to accommodation and housing (see the Safe Homes guidance)
