Poland: Poll on public attitudes towards those fleeing Ukraine

Flag of Poland

According to the latest report by the Public Opinion Research Centre (CBOS), the 'overwhelming majority' of Poles are still keen to welcome those fleeing Ukraine. The report also finds, however, that this support dropped by 10% over the last month: from 83% - 73%. This represents a significant reduction in support since the period immediately after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, when Poles were found to be almost unanimously in favour of welcoming those from Ukraine. At present, according to the report, one in five people is opposed to the idea.

Among the groups least willing to accept refugees from Ukraine, according to the report, are:

  • young women aged 18-24 (47% in favour);
  • those assessing their own financial situation negatively (50%);
  • those without higher education (60%);
  • people living in small towns and villages (68%).

April 2023 also saw the lowest percentage of Poles offering voluntary and free help to Ukrainians since the beginning of the war: 39%, according to the report, compared with 63% at this time last year and 46% a month previously.

Suggested reasons for this apparent decline in hospitality towards refugees from Ukraine include the worsening economic situation in Poland and, relatedly, in the case of young women, perceived threat of competition in the labour market: most of those fleeing Ukraine are also women.
