Italy: UNHCR expands Common Space project to Naples

Flag of Italy

On 13 November UNHCR, NGO Action Aid, and the municipality of Naples launched a new integration service for refugees and migrants. The "Common Space" project launched in Naples follows the implementation of the same project (promoted and funded by UNHCR) in other major Italian cities such as Rome, Milan, and Turin.

The main objective of the Common Space model is to facilitate refugees' access to information and integration services, while fostering the development of positive and productive partnerships between public administrations and civil society at the local level.

The project works to facilitate the presence of immigrants in these cities, with Roma, Bari, Naples, Turin and Milan having also signed the "Charter of Inclusive Cities". With the launch of the Common Space project in Naples, all these cities now have a tailor-made, multifunctional centre where all services related to the integration of immigrants can be found.

According to UNHCR, "Common Space" is built using a holistic, person-centred approach that helps to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the provision of various integration services. In line with the "whole-of-society approach" outlined in the UN Global Compact on Refugees, the project aims to promote the coordinated management and delivery of services by different actors, organised under one roof, with the involvement of local authorities and the coordination of municipalities. This project provides for an exchange of experiences and coordination between the various actors involved in the refugee protection and integration system in different capacities.
