Convivial, a movement for the integration of refugees, launched a campaign targeting landlords. At the heart of this campaign is a video presenting Marc, a “shrew landlord” that seeks Convivial’s services to rent property to refugees. The objective of this campaign is to encourage other landlords to do the same thing.
Each year, Convivial helps about 800 refugees in their search for housing. When a person has the refugee status, they have 2 months to leave the reception center and search for housing. This search encounters various stumbling blocks: difficulty
in regards to low income, poor knowledge of the language, lack of benchmarks regarding the operations of the rental market, but also prejudice and negative stereotypes from the owners. For the landlords, their fears include the lack of insurance over financial risk from a tenant dependent upon social benefits, as well as over other fears related to the image that they have of the lifestyle of immigrants.
