The Swedish government announced the development of an "integration barometer" to regularly measure differences between people born in the country and people born abroad that are relevant to integration policy.
For this purpose, Statistics Sweden has been commissioned to conduct a feasibility study to identify methods for monitoring such differences, with specific regard to aspects of the sub-goals of Sweden's new integration policy objective, which are difficult to measure using data available on the existing population register. The study will focus on democratic, social and cultural integration.
According to the government, improved knowledge of differences in needs, values and conditions among the foreign-born population (compared with those born in Sweden) will facilitate following up on progress on the country's integration policy objective and could also contribute to more accurately shaped actions to support integration of migrants.
As regards the sub-goal of linguistic integration, Statistics Sweden has separately been tasked with analysing how to monitor listening comprehension and oral ability in the Swedish language among adults born abroad, and to carry out a follow-up of reading comprehension.
