Sweden: Government adopts new integration policy objective

Flag of Sweden

The Swedish government adopted a new integration policy objective. This follows the publication of a report by a government inquiry on the country's integration policy (Utredningen om en målstyrd integrationspolitik), tasked with proposing a new objective.

The official English translation of the new objective is as follows:

"Foreign-born women and men should have the same obligations, rights and opportunities as the rest of the population to live their lives in freedom, dignity and independence within the Swedish community. This requires that those living long term in Sweden make an effort to become a part of the Swedish society and that the society both set requirements and provide opportunities for integration. Integration policy should contribute to social, cultural, economic, linguistic and democratic integration and, through education, improve the conditions for girls and boys from foreign backgrounds."

The new integration policy objective is divided into sub-goals targeting economic integration, linguistic integration, education, democratic integration, and social and cultural integration. While it refers to the need to provide opportunities for integration, there is no explicit mention of the role of local residents and civil society in the integration process.
