Social research scholarship for non-Italian origin youth researching migration and integration

Flag of Italy

The Forum of International and European Research on Immigration (FIERI) published an open call for a funded training scholarship in social research for non-Italian origin youths wishing to investigate specific topics related to migration and integration in Italian society.

Social research on migration dynamics and integration processes is usually carried out by non-migrant, native researchers. This has been the case in the Italian context where, although immigration has been a determining factor in the national demography for decades, young migrants or individuals with a migrant background are significantly underrepresented in cultural professions and in academia. The call aims to tackle this issue.

Applicants for the scholarship must:

  • be born abroad or have a migrant background;
  • be under 30 years of age or under 32 if they have previously obtained a Ph.D.;
  • have obtained (in Italy or abroad) a master’s degree or a Ph.D. in Historical, philosophical, pedagogical and psychological sciences; Juridical sciences; Economic and statistical sciences; Political and social sciences.

To apply, candidates must submit:

  • an up-to-date Curriculum Vitae;
  • a motivation letter explaining the interest in the call and the personal migrant background;
  • a research proposal (max. 12 000 characters, including spaces) preferably connected to one of the following topics: i) migration flows, intra-EU mobility and transnationalism; ii) mixed flows, asylum and international protection; iii) integration: conditions, relationships and perceptions; iv) labour, entrepreneurship and remittances; v) integration and welfare policies; vi) racism, discrimination and diversity; vii) narratives and public communication in relation to migration; viii) creativity and artistic productions on migration and/or by individuals with a migration background.

The selected candidate will be asked to write three short articles or a working paper on the research topics. Candidates with specific skills, for example in the audio-visual field, may propose research products different from written documents. Furthermore, the candidate will organise, with the support of the FIERI team, a public event in order to present the research results.

The activities supported by the grant will start on 1 September 2022 and will end on 31 August 2023. The deadline for applications is 30 June 2022.

Migricerca II is financially supported by Compagnia di San Paolo.
