The War and Labor project is an investigative effort that examines the labour exploitation of refugees displaced from Ukraine in Europe, including in the Czech Republic, Germany, and Lithuania.
Many of those displaced by the ongoing war in Ukraine have found themselves vulnerable to exploitation in industries such as cleaning, construction, and manufacturing, where they can be subjected to unfair labour practices. Their struggles range from missing wages and illegally low pay to untenable housing conditions, psychological violence, and complete disregard for their wellbeing and the wellbeing standards set by employment law.
The project is supported by the International Women’s Media Foundation and the Otto Brenner Foundation, and involves journalists from various countries, who work collaboratively to uncover and report on the systemic exploitation faced by Ukrainian refugees across Europe, aiming to bring attention to their plight and push for better protections.
The output of the project is a series of articles and podcasts in English, Czech, German, Lithuanian and Ukrainian, which are being published in major media outlets across relevant countries as well as on a dedicated website.
