Czech Republic: Annual report on migration and integration

Flag Czech Republic EWSI

The Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic, in cooperation with other ministries, published the Report on the situation in the field of migration and integration of foreigners on the territory of the Czech Republic in 2023. The report provides detailed information on legal and illegal migration, international protection, and the integration of foreigners in the Czech Republic in 2023, and compares some profile indicators with 2022 and other previous years. It thus provides a basic overview of migration trends in the Czech Republic.

The total number of foreigners residing in the Czech Republic in 2023 continued to exceed 1 million, primarily due to the consistently high number of new arrivals from Ukraine. The structure of foreigners in terms of nationalities has been stable for a long time. Most foreigners living in the country in 2023 came from Ukraine (574 447 people), Slovakia (119 182) and Vietnam (55 677).

In the area of legal migration, measures adopted in 2023 focused primarily on topics related to labour migration. Due to limited possibilities for accepting foreign workers from traditional source countries for labour migration (suspension of residence permit applications at the Czech embassy in Ukraine and applications submitted by citizens of Russia and Belarus, in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine), the Czech government established new quotas for other source countries, with the most significant increases in the Philippines and Mongolia, in favour of medium- and low-skilled workers.

In the area of irregular migration, in 2023 the Czech Republic was largely used as a transit country for individuals migrating illegally to other, primarily Western European countries. Despite a significant year-on-year decrease, the number of people detained in the Czech Republic for illegal migration in 2023 reached the second-highest level since the migration crisis in 2015 (13 898 people).

In the area of international protection, the Czech Republic received the third-lowest number of applications for international protection since 2015: 1 425 in total.
