The European Migration Network (EMN) published an inform on access to autonomous housing in the context of international protection.

The European Commission (EC)’s Action Plan on Integration and Inclusion 2021-2027 highlights the importance of promoting models of autonomous housing - rather than collective housing - for asylum applicants, especially families, and of disseminating and scaling up successful innovative models of inclusive and affordable housing for beneficiaries of international protection.

This publication looks as the dynamics involved in securing such housing for beneficiaries of and applicants for international protection, examining the challenges they face in accessing it. An overview is also provided of the different approaches and strategies employed by EMN Member Countries and Serbia to support this access, including by highlighting good practices.

Good practices identified across these countries include:

  • the provision of financial support for initial costs associated with signing a lease;
  • the early provision of information on access to autonomous housing;
  • enhanced coordination in the provision of support;
  • fostering general integration;
  • ensuring flexibility for individuals to move out of reception centres.
