Social interpretation service in Belgium translates COVID-19 information in 14 languages

SetisW, the social interpretation service of Wallonia (Belgium), publishes videos and documents translating the government’s decisions and measures related to COVID-19.

Project Goal

The interpreters of SetisW have noticed that many newcomers do not access and understand official safety measures in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Insuring safe conditions has become highly problematic for migrants in many contexts. From SetisW’s point of view, refugees and migrants (including migrants in-transit) are also entitled to have access to information in order to protect themselves and others.

How it works

SetisW, which works mainly with immigrant reception institutions, has translated official recommendations into 14 languages: Albanian, English, Arabic, Armenian, Dari, Spanish, Farsi, Lingala, Urdu, Pashto, Polish, Russian, Somali, Swahili, Chechen and Turkish.

The translations cover topics like how to properly wash your hands, how to sneeze, what outings are authorised and other information that newcomers may not be aware of. The translations include written texts and video clips, which are shared on YouTube.

The aim is to make the translations available to frontline actors, as well as anyone who regularly interacts with people with an immigrant background. Social workers, employers in various sectors, police officers and others can use the videos and documents in order to make sure that the information reaches everyone.

Results

The initiative is being disseminated in the media and is available through SetisW’s website and on YouTube in order to reach the largest possible audience.

Who benefits

The initiative targets newcomers who are not fluent in Belgium’s national languages, people who work or live with them. Indirectly, all of society will benefit from a better, more widespread understanding of COVID-19 safety measures.

Funding and resources

Support for this initiative comes from the Wallonia Region.
