As part of its pact on migration and asylum, in April 2022 the European Commission (EC) proposed new sustainable legal migration measures. These include, as well as actions to boost the EU economy and strengthen cooperation with non-EU countries, specific actions to facilitate the labour market integration of those fleeing the ongoing war in Ukraine.
To provide a more effective framework for legal pathways to the EU, the Commission is proposing to revise the Single Permit Directive and the Long-Term Residents Directive.
Revisions to the Long-term Residents Directive will make it easier for people to acquire long-term residence status in the EU, and will include:
- the simplification of admission conditions, including by allowing the cumulation of residence periods in different EU countries;
- increased rights for long-term residents and their family members, including through improvements to family reunification processes and facilitated intra-EU mobility.
