Denmark in new UN convention case

Experts say Parliament has ignored another UN convention.

Denmark has been at odds with another United Nations convention over the past 18 months, according to the Institute for Human Rights.

 

In 2006, Denmark tightened its citizenship rules – among other areas in language requirements. Handicapped people could win dispensation from these requirements – but a government circular on the Danish rules made it clear that those suffering from post-traumatic stress (PTSD), among whom those who have experienced wars are found, could not win dispensation.

 

In August 2009, however, the United Nations Handicap Convention came into force in Denmark, with the ministry reporting that in concrete cases, PTSD could be seen as a handicap.

 

 

The government circular, however, has not been amended.
