Czech Republic: Solutions sought to stabilise funding for non-profit organisations

Flag Czech Republic EWSI

An executive order issued by US President Donald Trump, which has suspended international aid for 90 days, poses a threat to some non-profit organisations in the Czech Republic.

The urgent issue is being monitored by the Czech Government Commissioner for Human Rights, Klára Šimáčková Laurenčíková, who also serves as the national coordinator for the integration and adaptation of war refugees from Ukraine. Ms. Laurenčíková announced that she will seek to stabilise funding through upcoming grant calls and discuss solutions with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Labour, and the Ministry of the Interior.

The restriction of funding has had an immediate impact on numerous organisations providing integration services for foreigners, particularly those supporting people displaced from Ukraine. Non-profit organisations are the sole providers of essential support services, such as medical interpreting or assistance for individuals at risk of homelessness,  for vulnerable refugee groups in the Czech Republic. This loss of financial support endangers the continuation of these activities, and comes at a time when solidarity with Ukrainian refugees among the Czech public has already decreased.
