The Special Secretariat for the Protection of Unaccompanied Minors (SPPUAM) published its annual report for 2022.
In line with the national strategy for the protection of unaccompanied minors in Greece, the SPPUAM designs actions and programmes - and proposes reforms to institutions and legislation - that are aimed at better safeguarding minors’ rights. This report presents the situation of unaccompanied children in the country as well as the flagship actions of the SPPUAM in 2022, which include establishment of the following:
- National guardianship system for UACs
- National registry for the protection of UACs
- Standard operating procedures framework of accommodation facilities for UACs
- Institutionalisation of the National Emergency Response Mechanism (NERM)
Also in 2022, procedures for assessing the best interests of the child were harmonised, and the capacity of reception structures was strengthened. Further, the procedure for carrying out on-site inspections through mobile primary healthcare units for unaccompanied minors was standardised. Partnerships were also developed to research the situation facing UACs and to improve their wellbeing.
