The Lunaria Association released its 6th white paper on racism in Italy, offering a critical examination of discriminatory trends towards TCNs and citizens with a migrant background in Italy from January 2021 to December 2023. The publication provides an in-depth exploration of structural and institutional racism, highlighting the expanding mechanisms of exclusion targeting migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees.
The report, based on systematic monitoring, documented 1 125 instances of everyday racism during the 3-year period. By presenting 10 analytical contributions and twenty exemplary stories, the White Paper reveals how discriminatory discourses, rhetorics, and practices have become increasingly normalized in Italian society and its institutions.
The publication finds growing authoritarianism in institutional approaches to migration, showcasing how discriminatory narratives have transitioned from marginal expressions to widespread social practices. Each carefully selected story illustrates the profound impact of racist incidents on individuals' lives, their media representation, and subsequent legal proceedings. Beyond documenting challenges, the paper also highlights anti-racist initiatives of resistance and solidarity, providing a nuanced perspective on collective efforts to combat discrimination.
Presented in Rome on 20 November, the report serves as a crucial tool for understanding the evolution of racism in contemporary Italian society, and the initiatives put forward by civil society to counter the structural and emerging forms of racism and discrimination, which are crucial for ensuring the positive integration of migrants and citizens with a migratory background into society.
