Educational actions for refugee children

Greek flag

The Greek Minister of Education established the Scientific Committee (SC) for the support of refugee children in order to survey the educational activities in refugee accommodation centres, undertake the organisation and supervision of these activities and formulate recommendations for the education of refugee children and their integration into the educational system during the school year 2016-2017. This report provides the results of the SC's survey of educational activities in refugee accommodation centres, and its recommendations for the psycho-social support of refugee children and their education. The SC supports the activities of the Committee of Support of Refugee Children, also established by the Minister of Education.

The survey looked at the educational activities organised in each refugee accommodation centre; the types of organisations providing the activities (NGOs, universities, etc.); whether the activities were carried out by salaried staff or volunteers; the content, frequency and duration of activities; the number of children or adults involved in the activities; and the infrastructure/space available for the activities.

Besides presenting its general objectives and principles regarding the education of refugee children, the SC makes detailed recommendations on: planning educational programmes for summer months; educational planning for the school year 2016-2017; educational scenarios for refugee children based on their age group, including scenarios for higher education; activities relating to sports, arts and technology; activities and training for the parents of refugee children; training for educators; educational certification; and administrative issues.
