The Fáilte Isteach project involves senior citizens teching English to migrants. It began in autumn 2006 in Summerhill Co. Meath. Members of the Third Age Foundation there felt they had the time and ability to meet the Engligh language needs of newly arrived migrants. Since then the project has spread with similar centres being set up all over the country.
Project Goal
The project aims to meet the needs of new migrants in an area who are experiencing difficulties in their social and working lives due to limited or non-existent English. Their research indicated that while a variety of organisations cater for the needs of non-Irish nationals, many offer services to refugees in urban areas, there seemed to be little funding for language classes for migrant individuals and families living in local communities, who are working or available for work.
Who benefits
The teachers benefit from a sense of value and making a contribution. The students benefit from improved language skills and also because the project provides them with a network and support group in their new home. And the community as a whole benefits from the improved level of integration that results.
How it works
The Fáilte Isteach project involves older people volunteering their time to teach conversational English classes to new migrants. The student-centered approach adopted by the programme provides basic language support in a practical, welcoming and inclusive manner. They offer support to communities all over the country who wish to set up similar programs.
Results
Students can attain at least a basic level of conversational English to help in their day to day lives in the community and at work.
Evaluation
In 2007 the Fáilte Isteach project was awarded a Social Entrepreneurs Award (Level 1) and this was followed by a Level 2 Social Entrepreneurs Award in 2008. The project received further recognition in 2008 when Mary Nally, Chairperson of the Third Age Foundation, won a People of the Year award on behalf of the project.
Funding and resources
Private Funding from the Irish O'Brien Foundation and the Arthur Guinness Fund. State funding from the Department of Integration. The tutors are all volunteers.
