With the support of the UNICEF Office in Croatia, the Croatian office of Médecins du Monde – Belgique (MdM-BE) set up a medical support and information centre for women and children in Zagreb. The centre focuses on the promotion of integration and the provision of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) services.

At the centre those displaced from Ukraine (as well as others in need of support) can access, among other things, information and prevention services concerning healthcare and related topics, support with referrals to public healthcare facilities (including laboratories, specialist examinations, prenatal care, paediatric care, child vaccination, COVID vaccination, and testing), support for registering with healthcare services and booking a health appointment, and transport support services (provided by public or non-governmental service providers). The centre also runs MHPSS activities, and refers survivors of GBV (Gender-Based Violence) or other types of violence to the appropriate protection services.

Project Goal

The centre aims to tackle issues commonly raised by its users, such as challenges in understanding how the national public healthcare system works and deteriorations in psychological health due to war in individuals' home countries.

How it works

On a daily basis, the centre provides the following support services:

1. Support for children, adolescents, and women to access healthcare

Specifically, ensuring that women, adolescent girls and newborns have safe and equitable access to quality, lifesaving, high-impact maternal and neonatal health services and SRH (Sexual and Reproductive Health) services, routine and additional vaccinations, and quality lifesaving and high-impact child health services.

This is ensured through:

  • provision of information about rights to access to the public healthcare system (social consultations) and provision of support for referrals to (public) health institutions;
  • provision of support to get essential orthopedic aids - prosthesis, wheelchair, crutches, glasses/lenses, etc.;
  • sexual reproductive health services (SRHS);
  • referrals for prenatal and postnatal care;
  • referrals for child health services, including vaccinations;
  • development and dissemination of info-prevention material addressed to primary caregivers/child guardians.

2. Support for preschool children and caregivers to access mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS)

Provision of mental health and psychosocial support through:

  • provision of MHPSS (initial mental health assessments and screening, individual psychological counselling, crisis interventions, psycho-educational workshops, and support groups).
  • provision of individual psychological counselling and support by a psychologist to women and children (suspected) survivors of violence, SGBV (Sexual and Gender Based Violence), exploitation and/or abuse.

MDM's work is conducted in compliance with the IASC (Inter-Agency Standing Committee) guidelines on mental health and psychosocial support, and in line with the “do no harm” and confidentiality principles. Services are currently provided by 2 social workers, 1 psychologist and 2 cultural mediators / Ukrainian interpreters.

MED-info centre services are provided:

  • in person at the MED-info centre, for displaced persons living in private accommodation;
  • by mobile teams visiting 4 collective accommodation centres in the city of Zagreb and the Zagreb municipality;
  • via the info-phoneline, available Monday to Friday from 9h to 16h;
  • online (e.g. via individual and group sessions for provision of information about rights to access to the public healthcare system, health counseling, and individual psychological support).

Results

Results by November 2022:

  • 111 children and women supported in accessing primary health care
  • 81 primary caregivers/child guardians reached with health information/promotion services
  • 422 services provided to children and primary caregivers
