The academic bulletin "Refugees: Today and Tomorrow" is the only specialised journal in Bulgaria that offers an in-depth and multidisciplinary look at the subject of forced migration. It covers topics related to protection, various aspects of integration, and public opinion. It has been published regularly since May 2020 by the Bulgarian Council on Refugees and Migrants (BCRM), with the financial support of UNHCR.

Project Goal
The bulletin was created in early 2020 to address the recommendations from the report "Mapping of Collaboration Opportunities with Academic Institutions in the Area of Asylum and Refugees" carried out by Dr. Vanya Ivanova in 2019. Within this study, a need was identified both for regular exchange of information between practitioners and researchers, and for a space to publish new articles and studies.
Therefore, the bulletin aims to be the first specialised space in Bulgaria in which academics, researchers, institutions, practitioners and refugees can exchange experience and knowledge on topics related to forced migration. The pages of the journal are reserved for up-to-date results of scientific research, and for analyses of policies, projects and initiatives of the public and non-governmental sectors.
The project aims to support the efforts of UNHCR, BCRM and all other partners in the sector for a more objective and fact-based interpretation of the topic of asylum as opposed to the myths and rumours that are spread through media channels and social networks. It was also created to support students, professors and researchers who work on the topic of forced migration. The editorial board hopes that the bulletin will serve as inspiration in creating new projects and planning specialised university courses and programmes, and in evidence-based policy making.

How it works
The bulletin is published 3-5 times per year, depending on available funding. Each issue starts by announcing its topic and an open call for papers. Then the editorial team reviews the submitted articles. The graphic designer makes the layout and an IT expert uploads the articles on the web platform. Every edition is sent to a mailing list of interested universities, academics, policy makers, and civil society organisations, and is promoted on social media.
Results
As of June 2023, 13 issues of the bulletin have been published. Each contains between 10 and 15 articles on various topics. In total, more than 50 authors have contributed – some are among the most respected academics in Bulgaria, while others are students coming from various fields including law, political science, sociology, ethnology, history, education, social work, communications, art studies, and others.
The topics covered by the bulletin are usually related to protection, legal analysis, country of origin analysis, statelessness, social work, cultural mediation, employment, education, housing, healthcare, phycological works, financial literacy, community work, socially-engaged art, public opinion, and more.
Evaluation
The bulletin project has not yet been officially evaluated. However, it specifically asks its readers to provide feedback after each issue is published, and has received very positive feedback from the academic community, researchers, NGO experts, refugees and project donors.
Funding and resources
The bulletin has been mainly funded by UNHCR Bulgaria. Sporadically, additional funding is secured through ongoing partnership with Multi Kulti Collective, a Bulgarian NGO, and its donor Sofia Municipality.
Funding is spent on payments to an editor-in-chef, graphic designer, IT support and, sporadically, some contributing authors. Most authors are not remunerated.
