MIRACLE-Migrants and Refugees. A Challenge for Learning in European Schools, Comenius project

MIRACLE is a Comenius multilateral project and involves representatives from different institutions in six European countries.

The consortium will develop 1) a teacher training course focused on cultivating political-intercultural competence among teachers in elementary schools and 2) teaching/learning material for elementary school pupils of varying levels. The main aim of the project is to enable pupils with migration background to pursue a successful school career.

Project Goal

The analysis of the present national and international target states in the field of intercultural education shows the following picture:

National curricula as well as the CEF are very vague towards the matter, what intercultural competence actually is or should be. In curricula, concrete indications are missing on how principles of intercultural learning could be didactically implemented. In numerous university teacher trainings, modules on intercultural competence are not compulsory.

Due to the development, testing and implementation of modules of civic-intercultural education under special consideration of the EU-migration policy, the above mentioned challenges should be encountered.

The main goal of this initiative is to develop a curriculum, test and implement a Comenius 2.2. teacher training course in the field of migratory didactics.

How it works

In order to formulate concrete training needs and modules for the teachers as well as for the development of teaching and learning material, the project has been based on the detailed needs analysis, conducted in the beginning of the project. The results of the study (the needs of both teachers and pupils) have been summarized in a comparative report. From this analysis, teaching and learning material has been tailored to meet the needs of the pupils and the content of the teacher training modules have been made to address the needs of the teachers. Materials are being tested in all partner countries and additionally reviewed by an external evaluator. The final 5-day seminar will be organized in Berlin, Germany from 17-21 October 2011.

Results

Needs analysis reports for five involved countries, comparative needs analysis report, reports on migration situation in five involved countries. 6 modules for Teacher training course, 45 teaching units to be used by teachers in primary schools, five Trial courses to test the modules, final 5-day Teacher Training course.

Users (teachers and other school employees) have expressed the need for such courses and reported high level of satisfaction with results.

Evaluation

Project is evaluated by an external evaluator, and partners evaluate the work on the project every six months. Teaching material will be evaluated by participants at Trial courses and at the final Teacher training course.
