Croatia: Anti-Racism Week

Centar za mirovne studije, Zagreb

The Centre for Peace Studies in Croatia is organising a series of events for Anti-Racism Week, from 18 - 24 March, in recognition of the international day for the elimination of racial discrimination on 21 March. On this day in 1960, people protested against the policy of systematic racial discrimination in the Republic of South Africa (known as apartheid) and against segregation laws.

Croatian society sees instances of racially motivated violence against migrant workers, veiled Muslim women, migrants and others with minority cultural and racial characteristics, but these are seldom reported in the media. With public narratives that define people belonging to these groups as a threat (economic; ideological; cultural) increasing, Anti-Racism Week opens spaces for the exhange of experiences and knowledge with the aim of better understanding and tackling racial exclusion and social inequality.

Schedule

The pre-week events begin on 14 March, with a closed round table and presentation of qualitative research project "Mutual support against hate", 13:00 to 15:00, Andromeda.

Augusta Cesarco Ravnica Library will host an exhibition of photographs focused on issues of women's rights, climate change, mental health of young people, global conflicts and refugees, social inequality, discrimination, and racism, until 15 March (08:00 to 20:00).
