Peter Nijkamp, Professor of City Economy at the Free University of Amsterdam came to the conclusion that migrants, on the long term, have a positive effect on the Dutch economy. He disagrees with the findings of the research conducted by Wilders PVV party which claimed migrants cost between 6 and 9 billion every year. According to Nijkamp the diversity among migrants is often underestimated. There are, for example, 70 000 entrepeneurs with an overall positive effect on the Dutch economy. Moreover, a cost and benefit analysis should focus on the long term effects, argues Nijkamp.
