Lithuanian government proposes giving some asylum seekers access to the labour market

FLAG_LTU

The Lithuanian government has submitted legal amendments to the Seimas (parliament) that would give asylum seekers access to the labour market in Lithuania. Under the proposal, asylum seekers whose applications have not been examined within nine months would be able to work in Lithuania.

The EU Reception Conditions Directive states that asylum applicants must have labour market access no later than nine months after submitting their request for asylum if there has not been a first instance decision within that time, and the delay cannot be attributed to the applicant.

Currently, asylum seekers are not allowed to work in Lithuania. The proposal would therefore bring Lithuanian regulations in line with the Directive.
