A variety of programmes intended to help asylum seekers integrate into the Finnish society received funding from the state on Monday 22 December 2015. A total of 1,080,000 euros has been granted to several charity groups arranging programmes meant to promote the integration of arriving asylum seekers.
The Martha organisation that will teach newcomers home economics and the Finnish Red Cross that will train asylum seekers for their first aid skills were featured on the list of charity organisations receiving support. Some of the first aid and cooking courses will target young people in particular. Dance and circus clubs, and IT classes will also focus on this target group.
An additional half a million euros has been set aside to arrange sports activities for different asylum seeker age groups. The money will be distributed by the six Regional State Administrative Agencies of the central government and allow asylum seeker reception centres to organise group leadership trainings, cooperate with local sports clubs, encourage outdoor exercise with regular excursions, as well as promote self-directed physical activity.
Education Minister Sanni Grahn-Laasonen hopes that the slated programmes will provide opportunities for asylum seekers and Finnish youth to get to know each other.
