Austria: New citizenship law is planned

Austrian flag

On Tuesday last, the two governing parties have agreed on a common draft for a new citizenship law. In the future, a three-stage system will be provided. Those who are very well integrated, get citizenship after six years. Whoever is well integrated, gets it after ten years, and whoever does not met the required standards, will do not get citizenship.  After six years, access to citizenship is possible if the person can prove a secure livelihood and has knowledge of German at high school level (B2 level).

The constitutional expert Joachim Stern of the University of Vienna criticizes several points of the new draft as problematic. Overall, it is a democratic political problem if a million people or 12 per cent of the living population in Austria have not the citizenship and the right to vote.
