Spain: Stakeholders' views on the integration of migrant children in educational systems

This report, published in February 2024 as part of European research project Migrant Children and Communities in a Transforming Europe (MiCREATE), provides an overview of strategies and recommendations for enhancing the integration of immigrant children in Spanish schools.

The report is built around interviews with stakeholders. Experts from several sectors analysed and recommended amendments to the policies and procedures now in place in education, taking into account the needs of migrant children as well as existing practices.

Those involved with the integration of migrant children in school at both governmental and non-governmental level advocated for a more transversal and expanded approach to migrant children’s needs, focusing on projects that aim to promote better inclusion of not only students but also their family members. It is also suggested that in order to guarantee the welfare of immigrant children in addition to their academic achievements, schools should partner with social and health agencies, recreational organisations, and businesses that provide extracurricular activities.

The report also suggests that academics, educational NGOs and schools should be encouraged to recognise the singular importance and personal stories that each migrant child has while at the same time offering them the same opportunities as local pupils. Other interviewees from the public sector stressed the importance of establishing programmes that would target all vulnerable sectors of society, including migrant children, in order to prevent the stigmatisation of migrants.
