Spain: Federación SOS Racismo annual report on racism 2023

Flag of Spain

The SOS Racism Federation published its annual comprehensive report on racism in Spain, focusing this year on the limits, impacts, and proposals against structural racism.

The report examines the European Union (EU)'s Action Plan against Racism alongside acknowledgement of a critical increase in reported cases of structural racism in Spain (inlcuding a +40% increase in June 2022). Its primary objective is to explore the nature of structural racism in Spain, looking specifically at issues of segregation, inequality, and rights violations.

Data and insights gathered encompass the experiences of affected individuals and various social and institutional agents. The report particularly emphasises gauging participants' perceptions of the political weight of racism and discrimination, exploring tangible instances of structural racism and examining its psychosocial effects.

With this report, the SOS Racism Federation aims not only to instigate public discussion on this issue which affects millions of racialised individuals in Spain, but also to propose crucial measures for comprehensive and transformative reporting and redressal.

The report emphasizes the imperative of implementing targeted measures to combat structural racism, advocating for a sustained, holistic, restorative, and coordinated approach. It underscores the significance of mental health in addressing structural racism's impact, the necessity for victims to understand reporting mechanisms, and the importance of community-focused actions in combating discrimination and racism.

The 126 individuals and institutions involved in the analysis highlight the lack of dialogue among political entities, public institutions, social organizations, activists, and racialised individuals to formulate short-, medium-, and long-term solutions.

In its conclusions, the report urges policymakers and stakeholders at various governance levels to consider specific policy recommendations aimed at fostering inclusive coexistence and cultivating anti-racist societies. These recommendations include comprehensive laws and policies addressing racism and discrimination from feminist and anti-racist perspectives, amplifying social participation in policymaking, investing in community-based anti-racist and educational policies, empowering racialised individuals and communities, and prioritising racial and social justice as pivotal instruments in the fight against racism and discrimination.
