Some migrant groups in the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and the United Kingdom have been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, experiencing a range of difficulties specific to their situation as migrants. These difficulties include issues of social exclusion. Additionally, certain migrant groups have a known range of risk factors for low vaccine uptake and face barriers to accessing national health and vaccination systems.
This report by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) presents:
- evidence on the clinical, health, and social impact that the pandemic has had on migrant populations in EU/EEA countries and the UK;
- COVID-19 risk factors and vulnerabilities in migrant populations;
- considerations for ensuring equitable access to the COVID-19 vaccine (through identification of successes, lessons learned and good practices).
The findings of the report should inform national public health responses in order to more effectively reduce transmission of the COVID-19 virus and support vaccine rollouts. By extension this will have implications beyond the pandemic, promoting health equity, human rights and universal health coverage in marginalised migrant populations.
