Czech Republic: The trauma of child war refugees from Ukraine in the context of education

This qualitative study, conducted by Palacký University Olomouc and Silesian University in Opava, describes and analyses the stories of child refugees from Ukraine. The stories of these children are compared with those of child refugees from previous conflicts in Europe, in order to better understand the experiences, attitudes, and needs of child refugees. 43 children and young people between the ages of 7 and 20 took part in the study, the majority of whom were under the age of 11.

The research found that war experiences often have the nature of traumatic events, including fear, loss of home, and family members. Older children were found to be more aware of the broader consequences of these events, while younger children focused more on personal losses and discomfort. Although the research did not focus on the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, the children exhibited psychological distress, sadness, and homesickness. The research confirmed the findings of previous studies, which showed that the lives of refugees are affected by war trauma and the stress of migration. The children often idealised Ukraine and had developed a positive cultural identity, which helped them cope with the situation.

The study highlights the value of schools as spaces in which students can explore and discuss their complex emotions and experiences. It offers several targeted recommendations for both educators and policymakers:

  • Child refugees must be provided with necessary and culturally sensitive interventions to facilitate their transition into a new society and life role.
  • Adaptation and integration programs for refugee children should take into account their personal histories and sensitively address the topics of war conflict and emigration.
  • Refugee children should not be segregated from the mainstream education system, and should be provided with inclusive education at all levels.
