MigraCode Barcelona

The MigraCode Barcelona programme is a project that forms part of the Open Cultural Center (OCC), located in both Spain and Greece. MigraCode, founded in 2019, is an ongoing initiative that bridges the gap between individuals with a migrant background and the labour market.

MigraCode’s main course is centred around web development, with approximately 18-24 students graduating every eight months. Currently, MigraCode, with the help of INCO Academy, has implemented a new non-coding course that focuses on IT support and security. This recent addition is a five-course certificate programme that allows students to gain the in-demand skills that are necessary to launch their careers in IT.

MigraCode believes that everyone deserves the right to education, especially those with fewer opportunities. The programme therefore focuses on those with a migration background who have the willingness to learn but for whom circumstances renders them unable to do so.

Project Goal

The aim of this project is to adequately prepare highly-motivated individuals with a migrant background to enter the tech sector. With many students coming from difficult and vulnerable circumstances, our aim is to ease their transition into this sector by providing them with all materials and support needed to successfully become professional Junior Web Developers.

How it works

This programme operates on the basis of four pillars: Open Education, Community Building, Job Placements, and Additional Support. MigraCode goes beyond education in tech and provides students with access to psychosocial and employability support. Through this growing community, students are surrounded by like-minded individuals with similar experiences, who are there to support one another through this vast network.

As technology advances, so does the need for new talent, which is why MigraCode focuses on free tech education and providing high-quality courses for migrants and refugees to develop new skills that are in high demand.

Following the intensive eight-month web development course, students become additionally equipped with soft skills, language skills, and better knowledge on how to successfully secure a job in this competitive sector.

The project is structured in six phases:

  1. Student recruitment process
  2. Selection process
  3. Course period (2.5 to 9 months, depending on the course)
  4. Final project (only for the web development course)
  5. Graduation
  6. Job placement activities (including job fairs)

Results

The overall programme metrics are available here

General results:

  • Until now, 93 students, have been accepted of which 24 are women;
  • So far 39 students have graduated, of which 28 have already found an opportunity (job, freelancing, further education, internship, etc.);
  • Volunteers are provided with the opportunity to gain experience helping refugees and migrants with employment support and technical skills support;
  • At present the project counts approximately 190 active volunteers.

Evaluation

The experiences of all students, teaching volunteers and event participants are extensively evaluated.

Teaching volunteers give an average score of 8.1 (out of 10) for their overall experience; graduates a score of 9.4 and event participants also a score of 9.4.

Who benefits

Migrants and refugees in Barcelona and, by extension, society as a whole, due to the economic contribution made to participants who secure a position in the labour market.

Funding and resources

The project operates on a budget of approximately 120 000 €. Additional financial resources are provided by organisational donations and collaborations.
