The aim of the project is to involve migrants living in the Czech Republic in volunteering activities in local volunteer and community centers as a tool for their integration and empowerment. The specific aims are:
- New social activities for seniors
- Inclusion of foreigners living in Prague in volunteering and other social and cultural community activities
- Support of multicultural and intergenerational dialogue
- Promotion of volunteering
- Networking with other municipal institutions and NGOs in Prague
Project Goal
The main goal of the project is to develop the potential of migrants living in the Czech Republic as volunteers and to improve social services for senior citizens of Prague (in particular, in Prague districts Prague 2 and Prague 4).
Who benefits
Through volunteer work our project helps migrants of different origins, ages, and education levels to adapt to a new socio-cultural environment, break the communication barrier and improve language skills, develop their social potential, and make new professional and social contacts. Additionally, volunteers provide new activities for clients of Czech volunteer centres and social services on an individual level or through public events.
How it works
Potential volunteers (mostly migrants, long-term or permanently living in Prague) report to our NGO and we help them find the most appropriate Czech voluteer centre to start with. Volunteers provide the following services:
- Personal assistance to senior people.
- Regular physical activity: exercise and yoga for seniors and the general public.
- Cultural, educational and leisure time activities: lectures about the home countries of migrants, cooking together, handicraft workshops, English language courses for seniors in Prague 2, Russian conversation lessons for employees and volunteers of Krc Faculty Hospital in Prague 4.
Results
In 2013: 65 volunteers 18-74 years old participated in the project (10 volunteers did regular activities in senior centres, the rest participated in individual activities).
Total number of participants in all events was approximately 400. The types of activities done by volunteers included lectures on health-related topics; lectures on cultures of different countries; handicraft workshops; English lessons for seniors; Russian lessons for health workers and volunteers in hospital; tea and culinary meetings.
Evaluation
Qualitative evaluation: regular supervision meetings with volunteers, one meeting with representatives of Prague 2 administration, one meeting with the management of senior centres in Prague 2 and Prague 4 as well as monitoring discussions with clients and volunteers.
Quantitative evaluation: number of activities throughout the project, number of participants of activities, number of volunteers. Public health professionals from the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague, are involved in consultations regarding physical activities for seniors.
The project is very positively evaluated by all participants and organizations involved. However, our NGO doesn’t have enough resources to enlarge the scale of the project (volunteers themselves oversee the coordination and financial management of the project). As a result, we cannot always provide all volunteers with the number of activities they would like to participate in. Regular supervision is also very important.
The project attracted the attention of media in the Czech Republic as well as institutions and NGOs who would like to participate in the project. The short documentary "Elena“ about the history of AMIGA and this particular project won the first prize in the international contest, “Migrants in the Spotlight,“ in 2011. It was nominated for the national award "Nadezda“ for best initiatives in the field of integration of migrants.
Funding and resources
The project has been financially supported by grants from the Prague 2 City district from 2011-2015. Annual budget is from 1,500 to 4,000 EUR.
