Improving qualification of teachers for the integration of migrant children into the Slovak education system

The project aims at improving teachers’ qualification in education of migrant children by applying their gained knowledge and skills during regular school classes and in extracurricular activities. The educational component of the project includes three trainings targeting a group of 22 elementary school teachers.

Participants have an opportunity to directly test and assess the developed tools and activities aimed at integration of migrant children into the school environment. The research component of the project monitors the impact of using the tools in the educational process.

Project Goal

Slovak teachers are largely unprepared for the instruction of children with migrant background. The education system  does not provide any programmes aimed at increasing teacher’s qualification in this area. At the same time, the number of children with migrant background steadily increases. Their enrolment is taking place in many schools in Slovakia, regardless of school size or geographical location.

The main objective of the project is to develop and verify educational tools aimed at the integration of migrant children into the Slovak educational system.

Specific objectives include:

  • To prepare general classes and individual educational plans accounting for the specific needs of migrant children.
  • To train elementary school teachers for inclusive and intercultural education.
  • To assess the impact of the newly developed and tested educational tools.
  • To disseminate the educational tools to the broader pedagogical public.

Who benefits

Elementary school teachers, migrant children fulfilling compulsory school attendance in Slovakia, Slovak pupils, educational experts and policy-makers.

How it works

The curriculum of the educational programme for teachers was developed by a team of experts and submitted for accreditation to the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic.

After receiving accreditation, the group of 22 elementary school teachers were recruted and trained to improve their knowledge and skills necessary for the inclusive instruction of migrant children.

Residential trainings for these teachers developed, under methodological guidance, their preparations for general class instructions as well as individual plans for long-term instructions of migrant children in their schools. Teachers then assess the implemented tools together with the team of experts on migration, integration and intercultural education. Besides written assessments, experts also visit schools for non-participative class observations. At the end of the programme, teachers will present their finalized educational plans in front of the expert commission.

Results

The main output of the project includes profiles of migrant children, preparations for class instruction and individual plans for children with specific educational needs. This output is developed by the teachers. Along with the educational outputs, the project will also include an analysis, assessing the impact of these developed and implemented educational tools in regular schooling.

Evaluation

Evaluation tools are used throughout the implementation of the project. Participants assess the impact of their own educational tools together with the experts who also conduct site visits to the involved schools.
