A new visa regime for citizens of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) was approved by the Portuguese parliament on 20 December. 

The Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) is composed of Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor. With this new regime, citizens of these countries will have easier access to Portugal.

Timorese and Brazilians will be able to enter Portugal as tourists and then apply for a residence permit. Other CPLP citizens will be required to present visas upon entering the country and then apply for residence permits. 

The regime also brings into operation the Entry/Exit System (SES), an automated computer system for registering the entry and exit of citizens from outside the Schengen area. At the same time as approving this regime, members of parliament voted to reject the creation of a new unit in the PSP police force to carry out checks on foreign citizens.
