Portugal: New agency for migration and asylum

Flag of Portugal

The Ministry for Parliamentary Affairs in Portugal confirmed that the establishment of a new Portuguese Agency for Migration and Asylum will be complete by the end of the year. This follows the restructuring of the Aliens and Borders Office (SEF) to separate administrative affairs from police issues, which means that administrative tasks will be left to the new agency.

This development is part of a governmental attempt to improve not only the response to the arrival of migrants in Portugal, but also integration in general, with work additionally being carried out to review and change the organic law of the High Commission for Migration (ACM). It is hoped that this will improve the efficiency of integration responses, deepening articulation between integration measures and public services and promoting appreciation of diversity in Portuguese society.

Portugal has so far welcomed more than 52 000 people from Ukraine following the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces, and has been hosting 883 Afghan refugees since August 2021.
