The Portuguese Lawyers’ Association signed a protocol with the Portuguese Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) to support the processing of 300 000 pending requests for residence permits from foreign citizens.
The goal of the protocol is to establish a pool of lawyers who will be available to offer AIMA their legal services for the approval and renewal of residence permits. The cost of these services will be covered by public funding.
The agreement will allow for clearance of a backlog resulting from a delay of several years, and ensure that migrants waiting for a decision on their legal status are given a full response.
