According to the 2022 annual report of the Aliens and Borders Office (SEF), Portugal's foreign resident population increased in 2022 for the seventh consecutive year. The foreign population in the country now stands at 781 915 people, with the Brazilian community remaining both the biggest and the one that has grown the most over the last year.

At the end of 2022, 239 744 Brazilians lived in Portugal, accounting for 30.7% of the total migrant population. This group was followed by citizens of the United Kingdom (45 218), Cape Verde (36 748), India (35 416), Italy (34 039), Angola (31 761), France (27 512), Ukraine (25 445; the report also states that overall, 44 519 people displaced from Ukraine were granted temporary protection in Portugal in 2022), Nepal (23 839) and Guinea-Bissau (23 737).

According to the report's findings, the most common reasons cited for the granting of residence permits to foreign citizens in 2022 were 'professional activity' (51 525 people) and 'family reunification' (27 054).

Concerning progress in integration, the report also highlights that in 2022, 310 foreign minors benefited from an SEF programme - implemented through collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Science - that aimed to raise awareness and 'legalise' the status of young immigrants in an irregular situation who attend educational establishments.
