In response to the growing need for provision of comprehensive integration assistance to refugees, especially those arriving from Ukraine, Caritas Poland - the largest charitable organisation in the country - has significantly expanded its network of migrant and refugee aid centres.
There are now more than 30 such centres throughout Poland, mostly located in bigger cities where the majority of migrants live, such as Warsaw, Poznań and Kraków, as well as in smaller towns, such as Pelplin, Urle or Janowice.
During the early days of the ongoing war in Ukraine it was necessary to respond first to the most basic needs of the refugees fleeing the country, such as those for food and safe shelter. While these needs still exist, the large number of refugees from Ukraine now living in Poland has additionally highlighted the need for greater systemic integration support, and it is this issue that the migrant and refugee aid centres are now working on, with a view to promoting these individuals' independence in the long term.
The centres provide various types of assistance, including in-kind, food and psychological support, and help with finding a job or an apartment. Some also subsidise accommodation rental costs for refugees.
