From 1 January 2024, a new support measure for economic and social integration (the "integration benefit" or "AdI") will be available for citizens and some third-country nationals (TCNs) in Italy. It provides family income supplement and a rent contribution, in exchange for the following of a personalised path involving participation in training and/or work activities and active policy measures.
In particular, the AdI is granted to families in which at least one member has a disability, is a minor or over 60 years old, or is in a "disadvantaged" situation and enrolled in a care and assistance programme run by the national social and health services.
TCNs can only access AdI if certain conditions are met. At the time of application and throughout the period of payment, the applicant must:
- have a long-term residence permit or international protection status (political asylum or subsidiary protection) in Italy, or be a family member of an EU citizen with a permanent residence permit;
- have resided in Italy for at least 5 years, including continuously for the 2 years prior to application. Residence in Italy is also required for family members who fall within the categories of Adl eligibility.
