Intercultural exchange of experiences of female migrants through street football

Development in 4 phases:

  • Preparation: inquiring for possible partnerships and participants
  • Introducing the educational and social aspect of the street football project; schooling and training of migrants as street football coaches. Collective visit to the partner project “c.a.f.e.” in Abroath, Scotland. Execution and implementation of several street football tournaments throughout Angus. In connection with the tournaments and the seminars that follow, the participants will have been introduced to the project and invited to similar tournaments in Germany.
  • The coaches, in co-operation with youngsters and participants of the project in Blossin (Brandenburg) will be responsible for an independent realisation of a street football tournament for tolerance. Continuing training and schooling of participating migrants to street football coaches and their participation as coaches at the final tournament. Contents such as press conferences, workshops regarding rules, tournament execution and the organisation of paper work will have been managed by the coaches on their own account. Continuing supervision as well as recording of their performances on camera, provides material for subsequent analysis and discussion about achievements and further improvements. Events have been visited by Mrs. Johanna Wanka, minister for science, research and culture in Brandenburg.
  • Development of sustainable social structures through connections with teamers at the project locations in Wünsdorf, Eberswalde and Lübben.

Project Goal

Adolescent’s engagement for clubs and associations is relatively small. In addition, many young adults are either unaware of possibilities to get involved in regional and nationwide projects, or lack motivation to do so.
The prime aspect of this project is to further young migrants' integration into clubs and associations. The aim is to teach migrants the practical and theoretical aspects of street football which will enable them to be in charge of tournaments and create awareness for responsibility. Personal engagement and the coaches’ necessary commitment to conflict resolution and communication will encourage a positive personality development.
Additionally, the aim is not only to initiate a cultural exchange, but also to show the value of international projects, thereby making possibilities for other engagements apparent. This strengthens and popularises the international project community, as well as the core project “Straßenfußball für Toleranz”. The prime beneficiaries are young migrants that are thereby more easily reached.
The coaches’ performances are to be subjected to continuous development and evaluation at coaching sessions.

Who benefits

Mainly girls with “migration background” participatedd. 160 young people from Scotland and Germany, mainly migrants, took part in the project.

How it works

The exchange of experiences between young people in Scotland and Germany within the project is facilitated through co-operation with the Scottish project “c.a.f.e.”. It guarantees an achievement of the international aspects of the overall goal. The co-operation involves the organisation of several tournaments through which coaches can gain experiences. The theoretical knowledge is imparted at manifold coaching sessions, which focus primarily on conflict management, de-escalation and street football theory. At tournaments, performances of coaches are supervised and recorded. Those recordings are evaluated collectively at subsequent coaching sessions. Furthermore, is the project “Straßenfußball für Toleranz” continuously supported at all locations and rounded off through the organisation of regular tournaments.

Results

The aim of the project, to introduce girls with a “migration background” to sports and to qualify them as coaches, has been successful. Today, young women work as volunteers at tournaments and are foremost involved in their home towns. Equally, the partner project in Abroath has been presented to socially disadvantaged adolescents. The partnership is taken care of by both sides through regular visits, which also shows the international aspect of street football. For the very first time, young people get the opportunity to organise and run a big international event independently, though not without professional guidance. This included registration, welcome, press conference, tournament, teaming, award ceremony, accommodation and departure.

Evaluation

Until now there exist 24 base associations. After six seminar weekends nine participants of the training "Consulting, design, modification - education for the Promotion of Democracy" were certificated. They work as advisors for clubs and associations. For quality assurance of the counseling collegial discussions will take place on a regular basis within the consultant pool. The consulting work is first project which the "gates of democracy" coordinates.

Funding and resources

The realisation of the project was put into practice by one member of staff. He was able to access resources from the project “Intergration durch Sport” and “Straßenfußball für Toleranz”, e.g. a network of local sport clubs and partners. The project was founded by the German Home Office.
