Athens International Radio www.air1044fm.gr

Athens International Radio was set up in the summer of 2004, to cater for the many visitors converging in Athens for the Olympic Games. It began life as a three–month project to inform and entertain the thousands of people who found themselves in the city of Athens. It was an instant hit.

Project Goal

In terms of longevity, Athens International Radio is still extremely young. But in the space of five years it has packed in plenty of high quality work. The future bodes well for even higher quality as we look to work with and provide a service for the different strands of society in Greece.

Το achieve this, the station has tapped into communities, embassies, NGO' s, government officials, sporting and cultural organizations and EU authorities so that they can work with us, hand in hand. Air Fm invites all to use its programs as a resource and as a way of keeping abreast of events and issues that concern foreigners residing in the country.

How it works

AIR now broadcasts in 12 languages. These are: English, French, German, Chinese, Albanian, Russian, Polish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Spanish, Portuguese,  Urdu (Pakistan). Plans are afoot to increase the number of languages.

All presenters are well trained journalists with fluency in their languages.

Results

Athens International Radio lasted longer than the three months originally intended and, with its mandate strengthened by all mayors, it operates today as a thriving news outlet, covering Greek, Balkan and European news.

With its links to the BBC World Service (Great Britain), Radio France International RFI (France), Deutsche Welle (Germany) and China Radio International CRI (Rep. Of China), it also covers live events of global interest.

Athens International Radio offers cultural, social and sports coverage and regularly features interviews with personalities, everyday people as well as policy makers. It has also broken stories which have subsequently made their way into the mainstream Greek and international media.  All this however has the full support of all foreign delegations in Greece and other officials residing in the country.

Evaluation

There are no ratings for Air fm available, only hits via internet and the interest of all foreign delegations, NGO's and other foreign organizations (schools, cultural organization etc.) interest in giving us interviews and wishing to present their actions through our programs.

Who benefits

It caters for the needs of visitors to the city but also for those who live in Greece in a permanent capacity. It took on a new mantle beyond the simple telling of news to look at issues closely affecting the immigrant communities in Athens. Great efforts have been made to work closely with the various communities in the city. The station has tapped into communities, embassies, NGOs, government officials, sporting and cultural organizations and EU authorities so that they can work with us, hand in hand. Air Fm invites all to use its programs as a resource and as a way of keeping abreast of events and issues that concern foreigners residing in the country.

Funding and resources

The station is funded by the Municipality of Athens.
