Netherlands: Health care interpretation ends in 2012

As of 1 January 2012, patients and health-related clients are themselves responsible for hiring an (professional) interpreter if they need one when receiving health-care. The caregiver may take the initiative to organise interpretation. However, the costs of hiring a (professional) interpreter will no longer be reimbursed by the government. The result is, undoubtedly a reduction in the use of professional interpreters in health-care.

Many parties, professionals, organisations and scientists in the health sector are against the measure. They point out that the quality, safety and accessibility of health care is jeopardized by this measure. The main argument is that good communication between patient and caregiver is one of the basic conditions for the provision of safe and effective care.
