The Swedish bill on integration policy 1997/98:16 entered into force as of March 1998. Its goal was to ensure equal rights, obligations and opportunities for all, irrespective of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Its objectives are primarily achieved through measures within general policies implemented for the Swedish population as a whole. When necessary, the latter also are complemented by targeted measures to support and facilitate the integration of newcomers during the first years following their arrival.
