Highlights

  • On the occasion of World Refugee day 2022, the European Commission (EC) published the results of a Special Eurobarometer survey examining public opinion on the integration of immigrants in the European Union (EU). 68% respondents were found to overestimate the real share of immigrants in the population, and 70% said they approve of the EU approach to integration as a two-way process.

  • Eurostat published data from the latest European Union Labour Force Survey (EU-LFS), highlighting obstacles faced by foreign-born people when attempting to secure a suitable job in their current host country in the European Union

  • The EC adopted a document outlining key principles and practices for the inclusion of displaced children from Ukraine in national education systems within the EU for the school year 2022-2023. Read it here.

  • The European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) launched an online anonymous survey through which people who have fled the war in Ukraine can share their experiences, in order that support providers might better understand their needs.

News

Refugee children initially denied access to the EU presented a petition to the European Parliament (EP) and the EC asking that migrant children already in the EU are relocated with care according to their needs, and that asylum procedures take into account the traumatic experiences of minors. They also launched a documentary project raising awareness of the situation of migrant children.

 

This new comparative analysis by the Nordic Council of Ministers examines the labour market integration of adult refugees settled in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. It finds that Sweden and Norway have similar labour market integration outcomes for refugees, while Denmark has substantially lower refugee employment and earning levels - in both the short and long term.

The PALOMA Center of Expertise published a list of good practices in refugee support for mental health professionals, including information on cultural competence and cultural sensitivity, holistic work approach, compassion fatigue and work guidance, and rehabilitation services for migrants.

 

A new training course opened in Portugal to teach people to better understand racism and the value judgements or beliefs that support it, and to consolidate knowledge on the evolution of anti-racist norms and measures to combat and prevent racism. The course is aimed at all citizens, including and in particular civil servants.

 

Funding opportunities

The Government of the Slovak Republic launched a funding call for universities and research institutions that aims to support researchers put at risk by the war in Ukraine.

 

Upcoming events

This one-week summer course will be focused on migration, integration and development issues, taking into account broader political, economic, sociocultural, demographic and geographical contexts. Scholars and practitioners from international and non-governmental organisations are invited to take part. The deadline for registration has now passed, but individuals can still request to be added to the waiting list.

 

Integration practices

Two small cities in the Liguria region of Italy are taking advantage of the funding opportunities offered by being part of the national reception system, in so doing improving local welfare services and better integrating migrants at the same time as increasing opportunities for local residents.

 

The Ödos Programme runs a reception centre for 50 migrant women and children in Montilla, Córdoba, providing both short and longer term support.

 

This online tool provides asylum-seekers, refugees and migrants in Bulgaria with multilingual information on various topics, from applying for protection to enrolling children in school and getting married. 

 

Through this project the Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) provided tablets and internet connections to migrant families to help children keep up with their studies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

Documents and publications

This report from the Erasmus+ MIG.EN.CUBE project explores the organisational characteristics of the business incubation services currently offered in France, Italy and The Netherlands, with specific focus on those targeting migrant entrepreneurs. It highlights the necessity of an inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem, wherein incubators, accelerators and other business support organisations are able to design and offer their service to heterogeneous groups of entrepreneurs.

 

This new, open access textbook on migration studies provides an introduction to theories, concepts and methodological approaches that concern various elements of migration and migration-related issues.

This report constitutes a follow-up to an earlier comparative analysis of labour market integration outcomes in Scandinavian countries. It includes analysis of long-term labour-market integration outcomes, comparison of various measurements for labour-market integration outcomes, analysis of changes in the usage of programme measures across countries and for refugees arriving before and after 2015, and assessment of the long-term integration outcomes of ordinary education, subsidised employment, and unpaid job training.

 

This European Migration Network (EMN) study identifies key challenges and opportunities for the integration of third-country national women in European countries, and looks at the related impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. It includes national reports for Austria, Bulgaria, Estonia, France, Greece, Hungary, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
