Tampere Week Against Racism (identified via a study undertaken by the Committee of the Regions)

The annual Tampere Week Against Racism gathers together numerous amounts of organisations to fight racism and promote a non-discriminatory multicultural society.

Project Goal

The Tampere Week Against Racism is a campaign to prevent discriminatory atmosphere and to fight racism in urban areas. The campaign brings together the efforts of numerous associations in the city which are involved in tolerance-building and anti-racism activities. Working together as a network the different associations concentrate in order to increase visibility of the events and activities during the Tampere Week Against Racism.

How it works

Activities organised during the Week Against Racism include public discussions and seminars about intercultural issues; cultural events such as films and concerts; popular public events like pub quizzes. All activities are marketed under the common slogan “Imagine a world without differences”.

Results

  • Important media coverage of the campaign (press, national TV)
  • A good cooperation of associations and public institutions
  • Important participation of associations of immigrants or refugees associations

Evaluation

Every year, following the Week Against Racism a meeting is specially organised to collect good and bad experiences or practices.

Two success factors can be underlined:

  • ‘human size’ of the activities and the full week
  • Participation and organisation of the associations on volunteer basis

Funding and resources

  • The Ministry of Education: 3600 Euro per year
  • City of Tampere: 2000€ per year
  • Private contributions possible
  • People involved in the campaign are volunteers
