The Migration, Integration and Language learning (MIL) project promoted the integration of migrants, including refugees and international protection beneficiaries as well as other third-country nationals (TCNs), in Portugal. It was run by Associação Lusofonia Cultura e Cidadania.
Project Goal
The project aimed to provide holistic support to the integration process of migrants in different areas. This support included language skills training, counselling, provision of information on services, rights and duties, and other actions designed to improve participants' quality of life, autonomy and multilevel integration.
How it works
The sessions were designed according to the needs of participants. Themes included:
- gastronomy
- citizenship
- rights and duties
- employment
- literacy
- language learning
Within these themed classes, commemorative dates such as Peace and Gratitude Day, Postal Service Day, Food Day and World Day of Portuguese Language were also celebrated.
For the improvement of participants' Portuguese language and literacy skills the project employed a methodology based on various popular educational approaches, including that of educator and philosopher Paulo Freire.
160 individuals attended Portuguese language classes. The project also attended 400 calls from individuals (for registration, guidance, information, etc.).
9 cycles of training were held between 2021 and 2023. The duration of training cycles ranged between 25 hours and 50 hours.
Results
Building on the project's activities, between 2021 and 2023 two products were created that combine Portuguese language learning and interculturality in the hosting society: a Portuguese Language Formation Guide for TCNs and a cookbook. These are both attached below.
The intention of the guide is to inspire and motivate people to learn Portuguese, using an accessible, well-structured method. It is designed to serve as a support instrument for the planning of Portuguese language training, incorporating 17 daily themes across different levels of language ability. These themes are broken down into 82 distinct suggested activities, and there are a further 14 suggested group approaches, which can be adapted to different strands.
The aim of the cookbook is to celebrate cultural diversity while fostering language learning and improvement, through gastronomy. It holds 39 original recipes from 19 countries, suggested by project participants during their classes.
Evaluation
The project has been positively evaluated, based on evidence of language skills improvement, the targeted materials produced, and practical feedback received from participants. A full project evaluation is not yet publicly available.
Who benefits
Beneficiaries of the guide are teachers and others interested in Portuguese language learning for TCNs. Migrant participants also benefitted from the teaching they received.
Funding and resources
The project's staff comprised one coordinator, one technical staff member, and one teacher. Its total budget was EUR 82 664.67, of which 75% (EUR 61 998.50) was funded by AMIF.
