In the city of Brussels, while numerous services and organisations are available to assist residents and visitors alike, finding one's way through all the resources can be challenging. Finding work and residence, subscribing to a healthcare system, enrolling in schools and language programmes, and obtaining a driving license are a few examples of important procedures that people might need help with when moving to a new country. Recognising this need the Info Kiosk BXL, part of the AccessIN project of Caritas International, aims to simply these processes.

Project Goal

The main objective of the Info Kiosk is to provide essential guidance on how to navigate the Belgian system to individuals of foreign origin settled in Brussels, seeking information and support.

The Info Kiosk BXL does not replace existing services but seeks to complement and simplify access to these services and organisations. Its ultimate goal is to serve as a bridge, facilitating newcomers' integration into the complex society of Brussels while seeking increased collaboration with governmental and non-governmental actors in the city.

Who benefits

The primary target audience is migrants living in the Brussels region in possession of a residence permit who might need assistance navigating everyday life in the city.

How it works

To access the Info Kiosk BXL, individuals of foreign origin needing information can visit the location at rue de la Charité 43, 1210 Bruxelles. Appointments are not necessary. The kiosk operates on Mondays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Additionally, for inquiries and assistance during working hours, there is a dedicated hotline and WhatsApp number. This service is available on working days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The official working languages of the kiosk are French, English and Dutch. There’s also the possibility to request translation from the “Bruxelles Accueil” interpreters.

Results

With its dedication to simplifying information access and increasing accessibility, the Info Kiosk BXL is a recognised tool in guiding newcomers toward a smoother and more enriching experience in the city. The project is currently small-scale, as it is in its first months. It remains to be seen how public stakeholders and funding organisations might view and be inspired by this hands-on approach to migrant integration.

Funding and resources

This is a pilot project with a planned duration of one year, starting in June 2023, with the possibility of renewal. This initiative is funded by the Fonds Asile, Migration et Intégration (AMIF).
