Cultural diversity in Slovakia in the context of work migration: trends and challenges for public policy

The goal of the project was to analyze the situation and the trends of the development of cultural diversity in Slovakia and to identify challenges for public policy, which emerge as a consequence of increasing foreign work migration to Slovakia. The project concentrated on the analysis of interaction (communication, cooperation and conflicts) of native inhabitants and foreign work migrants working in Slovakia. The formation process of new minorities in the Slovak society and its effects on the native population – members of the majority population as well as members of traditional minorities – was the main point of interest.

The key place where this interaction occurs is the labour market, or the working place and location (township, city, and neighborhood). Particular attention was paid to the analysis of layered disadvantages or advantages to which members of new minorities, as well as the native population and traditional minorities, can be exposed.

The project helped fill in the gaps in knowledge of these phenomena and contributed to the enrichment and deepening of the Slovak debate concerning this issue. New information and findings free from myths and stereotypes can strongly help the development of an adequate public policy, thus improving the integration of new minorities, the quality of multicultural coexistence and the position of disadvantaged groups.

 

Project Goal

The project had three main challenges:

1. Research and monitor activities which helped fill in the deficit of knowledge and information. Part of the activities was to research positive examples or experiences (improvement of coexistence or interaction between new minorities and the majority or new or traditional minorities, activities for disadvantaged groups) and their elaboration in a language accessible for the wider public.

2. Communication of the research results to the specialized public and contribution to the debate.

3. Dissemination of the research results to the wider public in order to reinforce the multicultural environment in Slovakia.


 

Who benefits

Key beneficiaries of the project were experts, policy makers, academics, students and all interested in culture diversity and multicultural society in Slovakia. 

How it works

Project successfully respondend to the challenges and key objectives. A wide range of research material related to new minorities and labour market were collected and widely communicated and distributed to a wide range of stakeholders. 

Results

The result was four in-depth case studies mapping the phenomena. The project collected data using an innovative methodology in Slovakia - the delphy method. The round-table discussions centered on analyses of the contemporary situation, legislation and prognosis for future developments and included a wide range of experts from different area of expertise - demographers, sociologists, lawyers, human geographers and economists. Result - publication - was then presented and widely distributed across Slovakia. 

Evaluation

Evaluation of the project consisted of autoevaluation methodology (monitoring key indicators, identification of weaknesses and strengths of the project in order to avoid mistakes and probles which occured during the project).
