The issue of return migration, in particular the assisted voluntary return, is not well-known. This book examines all the diverse typologies of return that have been carried out until now and presents statistics and analysis on their impact. Removing irregular immigrants in a compulsory way, through police escort, has very negative effects and requires a significant financial effort: compulsory actions may become counterproductive, when they are not limited to very specific cases. It is therefore necessary to look at other forms of migration flows’ containment, as encouraged by the De Mistura Commission. More attention towards immigrants looking for work should also be extended to their countries of origin, whose difficult conditions are implicitly presented to us with every landing, but we often seem to think only about “defending ourselves”. Balanced regulations able to reconcile openness and rigour: this is the option suggested by the present study on migration return, that could be an incentive to a more dynamic and functional immigration policy. This study – which is the third published since the authors of “Dossier Statistico Immigrazione Caritas/Migrantes” (Idos Study and Research Centre) begun to work as National Contact Point for the development of the European Migration Network – completes the previous ones focused on “The Impact of Immigration on Italian Society” and “Irregular Immigration in Italy”.
