EMN Estonia published the Annual Migration Policy Report 2023. The report provides an overview of the most important developments in migration in 2022, both in Estonia and in the European Union.
Key outtakes from the report include the following:
- Estonia granted temporary protection to nearly 42 000 people displaced from Ukraine.
- The number of applications for international protection in Estonia soared in the context of the war in Ukraine: the largest share of beneficiaries of international protection in 2022 were Ukrainian citizens.
- The number of irregular border crossings and asylum applications in the EU increased significantly in 2022, to approximately 330 000: an increase of 64% compared with the previous year. The most frequented irregular migration routes were across the Western Balkans.
- Labour and family migration to Estonia increased, while study migration decreased significantly. The number of residence permits granted for family migration increased by 8%, and by 9% for labour migration. The number granted for study migration fell by 49%, and by 20% for business migration.
